Have You Checked the Weather?

A joint agreement between the Logan County Conservation Districts and the Kentucky Climate Center at Western Kentucky University is beginning to yield great benefits for the citizens of Logan County.  The Baker Natural Area weather station is now providing updated weather conditions for Logan County every 5 minutes.  This station is part of the Kentucky Mesonet system which is a newly developed system of weather stations to help more accurately track weather trends in Kentucky.   The station located here in Russellville was the second such station installed in the state.

Presently the current weather conditions can be accessed at the Kentucky Mesonet web site at http://kymesonet.org/.   The weather conditions for each station that is available in Kentucky can be viewed under the Live Data heading of the web site.  Presently there are only three mesonet weather stations in Kentucky.  Plans are to develop 100 plus weather stations across Kentucky to more accurately predict weather trends in the state. Prior to the installation of the Baker weather station, the rainfall and weather patterns for Logan County were determined by the weather station located in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  This is the first official weather station to serve Logan County.

The Baker Natural Area which was purchased by the Logan County Conservation Districts in partnership with the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund continues to meet the goals of providing natural resource education to the citizens of Logan County.  The weather station is just another tool that will assist in this endeavor.  The Logan County Conservation Districts are proud to be a part of this great opportunity

to benefit the citizens of Logan County.

As more components are added to the

station, more guidance and information

will be available online.  Eventually the

station will serve not only to record local

weather data, but also aid in monitoring

and forecasting during severe weather

events.
